The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings will be gearing up for a new season shortly, but a few things to take care of beforehand, including their annual general meeting (AGM) on Wednesday, August 13. The Red Wings will take this time to review the great season they had last year, including financial statements, and look ahead to the 2025-2026 year. Ryder Burns, sales and marketing coordinator with the Red Wings, says although this isn’t his first AGM, it will be a new experience but shouldn’t have too many changes.
“Basically, (the) same as last year. I'll obviously have more to say this year. I didn't have as much to say last year because I didn't really know what happened the year before, but now I know what happened. So, it's basically just Coach (Cody Mapes) & President (Lori McIntosh) (talk) finances; what's ahead, what did good last year and kind of let everyone know how we're doing and what we’re doing.”
The AGM will be held at the Ramada by Wyndham here in Weyburn in their conference room starting at 7:00 P.M. It is free for the public to attend, however only Weyburn Red Wings members in good standing will be able to vote on items at the meeting.
For those renewing their membership, it costs $20 and if you’re interested in becoming a member, it is $50. There is a new board member information section located on their website which includes the application form and expectations.
A few topics of discussion that will take place at the meeting of course a recap of last season, which saw the Red Wings make the SJHL finals for the first time since 2012. A review of their financial statements and comparison of year’s past. As well, the Red Wings will see some new faces in the staffing group, both with board members and the search for a new assistant coach. Casey O’Brien was the assistant coach last year but has stepped into a head coaching role with the U18 AAA Notre Dame Hounds men's team.
After the AGM, the Red Wings will welcome players back to the Opportunity City for their fall camp culminating to their Eric Calibaba and Friends Cup, an intersquad Red vs. White that concludes fall camp. They will keep the action on the ice with the SJHL releasing their preseason schedule. The Red Wings will have a home-and-home against the Melville Millionaires on Friday, September 5th and Saturday, September 6th and wrap up preseason with a home-and home against the Estevan Bruins on Tuesday, September 9th and Wednesday, September 10th.
The Red Wings will then briefly trade their hockey sticks for golf clubs as they host their alumni par 3 golf tournament on Saturday, September 13th. Finally, the 2025-2026 regular season will kick off on Friday, September 19th when the Weyburn Red Wings host the Yorkton Terriers at Crescent Point Place.
