A woman is dead after a high-speed collision in Red Deer late Tuesday involving a stolen pickup truck, RCMP say.

Police were called around 4:21 p.m. on Aug. 12 to the intersection of 40 Avenue and 22 Street, where officers found that a stolen pickup truck had struck an SUV. Witnesses began assisting the SUV driver when the pickup truck driver attempted to steal vehicles from bystanders.

The suspect fled in a stolen SUV, which was later involved in another collision on 39 Street. He then ran on foot but was quickly arrested without further incident.

The driver of the SUV, a 46-year-old Red Deer woman, was pronounced dead. Her name is being withheld out of respect for her family.

An Alberta RCMP collision reconstructionist attended the scene, and investigators say speed and drugs are believed to have contributed. The suspect remains in custody awaiting a judicial interim release hearing.
