Producers in the southwest are still dealing with the aftermath of the large amounts of rainfall and intense winds that hit in the last three weeks.

This is a benefit to producers that have early stage crops in the ground, but to those crops that are in the later stages of growth, it’s just too little too late.

“Just the heavy rainfall along with strong winds in some areas, but it really just depends on how much rain that you got and in how short of a time frame you got it.” says Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture Crop Extension Specialist Tyce Masich. “If you get a whole bunch of rain at once, it won't really do too much for the crop. “

However, Masich says the rain also benefits soil moisture and retention heading into the fall and the next growing season.

Provincial crop topsoil moisture is being reported as 75 per cent adequate.

Additionally, with the release of last week’s crop report, the southwest is starting to record data for the harvest season. Many producers that are beginning harvest are doing so on their winter cereal crops.

Most of the provincial harvest progress has been made in the southwest, but there are some producers in the southeast and east-central that are starting to take crop off.

The full crop report for the period of August 5 to 11 can be viewed on the Government of Saskatchewan website.
