A splash of colour is coming to downtown Red Deer on Saturday, August 30 from 12–4 p.m.
Altruistic Current, in partnership with Downtown Red Deer, the Red Deer Arts Council, and the City of Red Deer’s Community Public Art Grant program, will host a free, all-ages Community Paint Day at the former Buffalo Hotel lot, 5031 50th Street.
Community members are invited to help fill in the background of a large, pre-designed mural created by local artist Emma Guido.
The collaborative artwork will span six panels, each 4 by 8 feet, later installed to form a vibrant public mural celebrating Red Deer’s people, nature, and history.
Amber Solberg, organizer and board member of Altruistic Current, says the event is about connection as much as creativity. “Even if you feel hesitant about painting, this is absolutely for you. If you’ve ever done a colouring book, you can do this, and we’ll guide you through it.”
The day will be set up so everyone can participate comfortably. “We’ll have panels to paint on, chairs for those who want to sit, and plenty of space for people to work at their own pace,” said Solberg. “It’s really about creating a fun opportunity to step outside your daily routine and make something new together.”
Local artists supported by the grant will add finishing touches after the community event. “The community lays the foundation, and then the artists add the icing on the cake,” explained Solberg.
Alongside the painting, attendees can enjoy a community BBQ, refreshments, and activities.
All supplies will be provided, and the event is designed for all ages and experience levels.
Solberg said one of her favourite parts of past projects has been seeing participants return later with friends or family to point out the section they painted. “It’s such a wonderful way to bring people together and inspire creativity in their own lives.”
Altruistic Current, a non-profit kindness society originally founded in Nova Scotia, is bringing its mission of connection and creativity to Red Deer.
Through initiatives like this, the group hopes to encourage residents to connect through art and community.
Organizers ask participants to wear clothing that can get messy and to bring sun protection and water if the day is hot and to please leave pets at home.
