No one has filed to run for mayor in Airdrie, with the Oct. 20 municipal election two months away and the nomination deadline set for Sept. 22 at noon.

The city’s candidate register as of Wednesday, Aug. 20, shows 10 people have filed for council: Simisola Obasan, Tomisin (Tomi) Adenipekun, Chad Stewart, incumbent Darrell Belyk, Chris Glass, Rekha Mehay, Jay Raymundo, Mo Fahad Shaukat, Maulik Shah and Anthony Morvillo.

Five others have submitted a notice of intent to run but have not yet filed nomination papers: Joshua Elo, Matthew Kangal, incumbent Ron Chapman, Shaganpreet S. Sooch and Geoffrey Lee.

Airdrie’s current city council is led by Mayor Peter Brown, alongside councillors Belyk, Chapman, Al Jones, Candice Kolson, Tina Petrow and Heather Spearman.

Chris Glass and Jay Raymundo, who were unsuccessful in the 2021 council race, are among those back on the ballot this year.

Under Alberta’s Local Authorities Election Act, candidates must be eligible to vote, have lived in Airdrie for at least six months before nomination day, and cannot be in default to the city, employed by the city without a leave of absence, or otherwise disqualified under the Act. A $100 deposit is required with nomination papers.

Candidates who collect or spend campaign funds must also file disclosure statements. Contributions received between Jan. 1 and July 31 must be reported by Sept. 30, while final disclosure statements are due March 2, 2026.

You are eligible to vote in the election if you are at least 18 years old, are a Canadian citizen, are a resident of Airdrie on election day, and provide one of the authorized pieces of identification.
