As summer in the southwest gives way to school season, it's an ideal time to get up to date on vaccinations and immunizations.
The Saskatchewan Health Authority is hoping to remind folks of all ages about the importance of having the necessary vaccines to avoid diseases and hospitalization, in addition to lessening the severity of illnesses.

Dr. David Torr, Medical Health Officer for the Saskatchewan Health Authority's southwest and integrated rural areas, and Area Department Lead for the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, shared that public health offices are situated throughout the province and can be easily located online.

"Every town will have public health services, our public health nurses give vaccines, and our family physicians provide some vaccines as well," he said.

While seasonal illnesses, such as influenza, tend to be more prevalent from October to April, other illnesses, like measles and COVID-19, are around all the time.

Torr noted that it's also important to receive vaccines for whooping cough and ensure that tetanus shots are up to date.

"Another thing we must keep in mind is that the vaccines are safe, very effective, and do help prevent a lot of disease," he added. "We really need to keep up with our vaccinations to keep minimizing diseases, not just for the individual, but for the community as a whole."

For more information about immunizations and vaccinations or a list of locations, visit the Saskatchewan Health Authority's website or contact a local health office.
