The quickest trip around the world begins when you turn the page.

Kids in Humboldt have travelled the world this summer thanks to the Reid Thompson Public Library.

Over the last couple of months, kids have been busy reading books with the Summer Reading Program with the theme “Around the World.”

Head Librarian Emma Lewis says with just over a week left in the program, the kids have been busy this summer.

“We’ve had 20 events through the summer we’ve had 200-300 kids so far, and our total so far has been over 5000 books read.”

Lewis noted there’s been a lot of different events, geared towards kids of different age groups. Whether it would be musical events, including musical chairs, musical crafts, or a musical activity show.

There has also been some magic at the library this summer with the return of Danny Kazem who returned for a show and camp.

Other activities include gardening, facepainting, STEM workshops, slime making, teddy bear picnic, and virtual reality.

On Thursday, a petting zoo was held inside Civic Park to give the kids a chance to meet some animals.

Lewis noted a key component of the summer reading program is that all the events are free of charge for the children.

“That makes it a really good opportunity for families to come and participate in.”

Feedback is a good thing when constructing a future summer program of events, Lewis noted the gardening workshop was a big hit this year with over 60 kids in attendance.

The summer reading program will be wrapping up on Thursday with a pizza party. Lewis says they will be handing out the four gift baskets for the top readers this year, she added with some gracious donations, they will also be handing out some runner-up prizes as well, but they must be in attendance on Thursday to receive those prizes.

Kids can finish off their reading logs on Wednesday, August 27.
