Animal abuse charges were laid in Weyburn last week after members of the Weyburn Police Service noticed an animal in the care of a woman they had been in contact with was not being cared for properly. Deputy Chief Shane St. John says they then got Animal Protection involved who initiated an investigation.

“They did an investigation and came to the conclusion that charges should be laid. They did seize the dog, and it is now in the care of animal protection. And then this person is no longer allowed to own any type of animal, not just a dog.”

St. John explains that the applicable charges fall under both the Animal Protection Act and Criminal Code of Canada. The WPS is responsible for the criminal charges while Animal Protection takes care of the rest.

The woman was arrested then released under conditions, including being prohibited from owning or caring for an animal.

“They might have checks on them, or if we see them with an animal, then they'd be in a breach of that condition, and we'd seize any animal that they'd have.”
