Roster spots aren’t the only thing on the line at this year’s Red Deer Rebels training camp.
Players will also compete for the inaugural Mikel McIver Cup in honour of the long-time Rebels dressing room attendant, who is entering his 25th season with the club.
Player check-in takes place Wednesday, Aug. 27, with ice sessions at the Marchant Crane Centrium beginning the following day.
The first-ever Mikel McIver Cup tournament will be held Saturday, Aug. 30. Four teams featuring both rookies and returning players will go head-to-head, with the winning team claiming a new championship trophy filled with McIver’s favourite treat — Mars bars.
Training camp rosters will then be pared down for the annual Black and White Game on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. Admission is a donation to the Red Deer Food Bank.
The Rebels will play four preseason games following camp, including two at the Marchant Crane Centrium: Sept. 5 against Calgary and Sept. 12 against Lethbridge. Both games start at 7 p.m.
