It won’t be long until the snow flies and the ice freezes here in Weyburn, and the Weyburn Skating Club are getting ready for another fun year on the ice. Throughout the winter months, the skating club will help kids here in Weyburn sharpen their skating skills and registration is open for those interested. Diana Hay, marketing coordinator with the Weyburn Skating Club, says there’s programs for all levels of skaters.
“Registration has been open since July 14th for PreCan and CanSkate (and) it is open until September 15th. For the Junior Development and for StarSkate, they’re open until September 13th. For PreCan and CanSkate fall sessions, they go from October 2nd, and they run for ten weeks. PreCan is one night a week (and) CanSkate, you can do one night or two nights and then there's a CanPower that we run with Hockey Weyburn that you can register through them.”
Registration for PreCan is for those aged three to five years old and for CanSkate is aged five and up. Fall sessions for PreCan and CanSkate will run from October 2nd for ten weeks and winter sessions will start on January 6th and run for ten weeks. The Junior Development and StarSkates will run from October 6th, 2025, to March 25th, 2026.
Learning to skate has been a frequent tradition for those here in Canada, with kids starting at three years of age taking the ice with a chair to support, all the way until they’re playing sports like figure skating and hockey. Hay comments that although registration numbers dipped a bit during the COVID years, they’re excited that interest is growing.
“Well, we used to have a fairly big group, but we have started to decline a little bit in numbers over the past couple of years. I know that we do have the PreCan skate is filling up and so is the CanSkate on the Tuesdays those ones are getting kind of full but the other ones are still just a few in each group so hopefully we can get a few more registered before the end date.”
Also, the Weyburn Skating Club is looking for sponsorship opportunities this upcoming year. As a non-profit organization, they’re seeking businesses, organizations, or individuals to sponsor the club to help offset the costs of coaching fees, ice-time fees, administration fees and more. The Weyburn Skating Club are also looking for coaches to help out with their StarSkate and the Junior Development programs and encourage those interested to reach out to them.
