Earlier this month, Crossfield mayor Kim Harris, Didsbury mayor Rhonda Hunter met with MLA Scott Cyr to talk about the Mid-sized Towns Mayors Caucus that both communities are a part of.
Harris explained that the caucus represents 84 communities with a population between 1000 and 14,999.
"We want to get reliable infrastructure funding for mid-sized towns from the province to manage moving infrastructure and growth."
She explained that many smaller communities have aging infrastructure.
"Some midsize towns still have wooden pipes, and we're really asking for a sustainable pot of money that will help these 84 towns with infrastructure."
Harris also shared that the caucus has met twice with the Premier to chat about the group and get the ball rolling.
"Now we're working with Minister Dan Williams, and we're going to work together to find some solutions."
MLA Scott Cyr reached out to the group, asking for a meeting to better understand the caucus.
"We had a really good meeting, talking about all the commonalities that small or mid-sized towns have in their infrastructure issues and trying to get enough funds to fix everything."
For Crossfield, the community is growing between six and seven per cent every year.
"When you add that to aging infrastructure, there is no way that we would be able to, on our own, raise taxes so much to cover the cost of what's needed."
When asked what the number one infrastructure project is for Crossfield, Harris explained is handling wastewater.
"The residents of Crossfield should know that we're lobbying the government as much as we can to ensure that our town gets everything we can from the province and or federal government to help us with our infrastructure needs."
