The last KPMG Taste of Summer Charity BBQ of the season was a hit, raising $2,183 for Eastman Special Olympics.
Regional Coordinator, Cathy Wiebe, says it is wonderful to feel the support for this organization.
“It makes me know that what I'm doing is right, that my athletes are the reason we're here, and people in the community know that. And I love that.”
Wiebe says everyone needs community and a sense of belonging. She aims to bring that to the athletes.
“Our athletes are getting involved with the community, and we are really trying to make this out to be just a community of people who have something to do together. Sports are just one of the things”.
Wiebe’s favourite part of the work she does is the friendships that come from it. She enjoys seeing people excited to come together and have fun.
“I really enjoy what I do, and this just helps us do more.”
The funds raised from the barbecue will be going towards their sports programming. Wiebe notes that they would like to get a few things running in Steinbach. She says curling, powerlifting, golf coaching, and a basketball team are all being considered.
With the money in their pocket, Eastman Special Olympics needs volunteer coaches to make this happen.
Wiebe explains how you can get involved and make these projects happen.
“They can give me a call at 204-999-5564. I'd be happy to talk to them about it, or they can call Special O Manitoba. Emma would love to talk to them as well. Either place will help you find the spots. If you don't want to coach, we have lots of non-coaching volunteer work too. We would love to have anybody who'd like to come out and help us.”
