With the school year starting across Central Alberta, drivers are being reminded to pay attention to school and playground zones in their communities.
Failing to follow posted limits can result in demerits and fines under Alberta’s Traffic Safety Act.
School zones are typically in effect on school days from 8 to 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and 3 to 4:30 p.m.
Times may vary by community — for example, Red Deer zones begin at 7 a.m. instead of 8 a.m. The speed limit is 30 km/h unless otherwise posted, and passing is not permitted.
Playground zones are in effect every day from 8:30 a.m. until one hour after sunset, also with a 30 km/h limit unless otherwise posted. Passing is not allowed while restrictions are in place. Enforcement times also vary by community.
Zones end only where signs indicate a higher maximum speed or the end of the zone.
When you approach a playground sign without a speed limit sign attached to it, you are entering a playground area. This sign is to alert drivers that children may be near, and you must use caution when driving through.
Be sure to slow down and pay attention when driving around schools this year, especially around crosswalks.
