In a note to parents and also posted to their website, Rocky View Schools has directed all schools to move outdoor activities indoors as wildfire smoke pushes air quality into the high-risk range.
The division said schools are following the Government of Canada’s Air Quality Health Index, which reached 8 in Airdrie on Monday and is forecast to rise to 10 or higher.
Students are to remain indoors for recess and lunch breaks when the index is 7 or above. Conditions may vary by community, and decisions on indoor activities could change through the day.
The changes are expected to have the greatest impact on physical education and athletics programs. Team practices may be cancelled, with updates coming directly from coaches.
Parents who keep children home due to air quality concerns are asked to report their absence to the school.
The smoke is expected to persist through Wednesday and possibly into Thursday.
