A human trafficking trial connected to our region has resumed after a summer recess, with the defence beginning to present its case.
The proceedings against Mohammad Masum and Sohel Haider had paused in June after the Crown wrapped up its case. Among the witnesses were Cypress Hills MLA Doug Steele and former MLA Hugh Nerlien, who both testified for the prosecution.

The Crown’s case concluded with testimony from the complainant, a woman who said she was employed in restaurants in Gull Lake, Tisdale, and briefly in Elrose.
The accused, Mohammad Masum and Sohel Haider, were arrested in June 2023 and charged with human trafficking, while Masum faces additional charges of sexual assault.
With the Crown’s case complete, the defence began calling its witnesses this week as the trial resumed in Rosetown Court of King’s Bench. The proceedings are expected to continue through the fall.
