A coveted annual award, given to one individual or organization in each province and territory, was announced on Monday as part of International Literacy Day.

The Southwest Literacy Committee was announced on Monday as Saskatchewan's recipient of the Council of the Federation Literacy Award (CoFLA).

Bula Ghosh, literacy coordinator and member of the Southwest Literacy Committee, shared that promoting literacy, learning, and reading from a young age are the foundations for ensuring a bright future.

"It's a good feeling because we do a lot of work, we're constantly looking for funds and constantly trying to make it work," she said. "Everybody's contributing more than they need to, and that's what makes it successful."

Books for Babies, the initiative that got the Southwest Literacy Committee recognized, strives to foster accessible reading by providing literacy kits for toddlers and preschool-age children.

"We had made a promise to ourselves that every household in southwest Saskatchewan with a baby that's over four months old will have books in their home," Ghosh added. "There was a report published that said that there were some homes in Saskatchewan that didn't have even a single book or magazine, so we wanted to address that, and then it started to grow."
