Saskatchewan schools and parent groups can now apply for funding to create safe, accessible playgrounds, with up to $50,000 in matching grants available per project.
The School Playground Equipment Grant Program supports school-operated properties across the province and can be used to build new playgrounds, add equipment, or replace components on existing structures. Applications opened yesterday and will remain open until Feb. 25, 2026, on a first-come, first-served basis. The program is administered in partnership with the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA).
“The province is investing $3.75 million annually over the next four years to enrich outdoor play spaces throughout Saskatchewan,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Alana Ross said. “This program supports the incredible work done by volunteer school community councils and parent groups who raise money to create safe, accessible playgrounds for children. It benefits kids, families and communities, and I look forward to seeing more projects break ground.”
SPRA president Darcy McLeod said playgrounds are critical for a healthy population. “Investments like the School Playground Equipment Grant help instill the importance of play and physical literacy in children and youth, which builds a more active future for our province,” he said.
The grant is open to school community councils and parent groups affiliated with publicly funded schools, school divisions, and First Nations schools. Eligible schools include public, separate, Francophone, independent (including alternative, associate, historical, qualified, and certified independent schools), and First Nations schools.
Regina Board of Education chair Adam Hicks said the funding will help build equitable play areas. “School playgrounds provide safe spaces for students and community members to play, grow and develop strength, agility, balance, and social skills,” he said.
Saskatoon Public Schools board chair Kim Stranden added, “Playgrounds are more than just places to play — they are vital spaces where students build friendships, develop skills, and connect with their school community. This grant recognizes the role outdoor play has in supporting children’s wellbeing and the fundraising efforts of parents and school community councils.”
