Town council has approved the installation of a new sauna at the Olds Aquatic Centre while also receiving updates from the RCMP and Olds College at its Sept. 8 meeting.
Council voted to use a $79,576 restricted reserve, stemming from a 2007 donation, to fund a self-contained sauna on the southeast pool deck. The project, estimated at about $65,000 plus electrical work, will be completed during the centre’s September shutdown.
Council also heard from Acting Sgt. Cpl. Leif Svendsen, who presented the RCMP’s quarterly report. Roadside suspensions for alcohol increased with mandatory screening and steady traffic stops, while property crime numbers were revised lower following file reviews. Domestic-related calls rose compared with last year, though RCMP could not identify a cause. The Olds detachment highlighted growing community outreach, including a Coffee with Cops event and new engagement with Olds College international students.
Olds College Board Chair Al Kemmere and President Debbie Thompson presented the school’s 2025–2028 strategic plan. Priorities include agricultural leadership, student support and partnerships. While international enrolment has declined due to federal policy changes, domestic enrolment is up five per cent.
Other council decisions included:
-
Approving a support letter urging reinstatement of the Summer Temporary Employment Program.
-
Adjusting the listing price of town-owned lots at $120,000 after an appraisal.
-
Authorizing the mayor to write to Health Minister Adriana LaGrange seeking updates on Olds Hospital upgrades and a review of physician compensation programs.
Council also received updates on economic development initiatives, property demolitions, and signage regulations.
