A local man is set to spend the next year behind bars and the next two decades on a registry after his recent sentencing earlier this week on a charge stemming from child pornography seized in 2023.

Maple Creek's Kiyomichi Nakanishi pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography in Swift Current Provincial Court on Tuesday.

Crown prosecutor, Gregory Lee, shared that the thirty-two-year-old admitted to possessing a total of five illegal images and two videos.

In addition to the 12-month jail sentence, Nakanishi must comply with the Sex Offenders Information Registration Act (SOIRA) for 20 years and is not permitted to be in any place where children would reasonably be for 10 years.

Additionally, he was ordered to provide a DNA sample and forfeit the device on which the images were stored.

The southwest resident was arrested on August 31, 2023, after the Saskatchewan Internet Child Exploitation Unit executed a search warrant at a residence and conducted forensic exams on several electronic devices.
