It was a strong night on the ice for Estevan hockey clubs, as both the SJHL’s Eagle Sky Estevan Bruins and the U18AAA Innovex Estevan Bears picked up preseason wins on Wednesday.
The Bruins bounced back in a big way, skating to a 5-1 victory over the Weyburn Red Wings. Estevan came out flying in the opening frame, finding the back of the net three times to grab control early. After a scoreless second period, Weyburn cut into the lead with a goal in the third, but the Bruins shut the door with two more tallies to seal the win. The Bruins continue their exhibition schedule tomorrow night when they welcome the Virden Oil Capitals to Affinity Place. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
Meanwhile, in SMAAAHL preseason action, the Estevan Bears edged Notre Dame 3-2. After a scoreless opening frame, the teams traded goals in the second, with the Hounds taking a 2-1 lead into the third. The Bears stormed back in the final period, as Ethan Boehm tied the game before Ben Schmidt buried the winner to complete the comeback.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday, September 13, when Estevan hosts Notre Dame at Affinity Place. Game time is 6:15 p.m.
