Cochrane was among the Alberta communities holding candlelight vigils for American conservative activist Charlie Kirk, whose life was cut short in a shooting.

Last night, hundreds gathered at the stage of the Cochrane Ranche historic site, holding candles and coming together in a moment of reflection and solidarity. Attendees prayed for his family, and some shared memories and thoughts as they stood together in love to mourn the loss of a life that had touched many.

Even larger gatherings took place in other Alberta centres, including Calgary, where thousands assembled outside City Hall in grief and remembrance.

His killing sent shockwaves around the globe and prompted larger vigils in the United States and elsewhere, including London, England.

The 31-year-old activist, who co-founded Turning Point USA at age 18 and served as its executive director, was shot and killed on Sept. 11 during an outdoor event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.
