The Alberta RCMP is urging residents to take steps this September to avoid becoming victims of cybercrime, a type of criminal activity where the internet and digital devices play a major role.
Police recommend several measures to protect personal information and digital accounts, including using strong, unique passwords for each account, enabling multi-factor authentication, keeping software and apps updated, and securing home networks.
RCMP also advise residents to be cautious on social media, limit sharing of personal information online, and avoid clicking links or opening files from unknown sources. Users should also install and update anti-virus and anti-spyware software to protect their devices.
“Cybercrime can affect anyone,” the RCMP said. “Taking basic precautions helps reduce the risk of financial loss and identity theft.”
Residents who suspect they have been targeted or are victims of fraud are encouraged to report incidents to local law enforcement and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. Banks and credit card companies should also be notified of any compromised accounts.
