Nomination day for Airdrie’s municipal election and the Rocky View Schools (RVS) Board of Trustees is one week away, with the deadline to file papers set for noon on Sept. 22.

The City of Airdrie said in its official notice of nomination, issued under Section 26 of the Local Authorities Election Act, that “Notice of Nomination Day is Monday, September 22, 2025 and that nominations for the election of candidates for the following offices will be received … within the period beginning on January 1, 2025 and ending at 12:00 noon on Nomination Day.” One mayor and six councillors will be elected Oct. 20.

RVS said in a Sept. 15 news release that trustee nominations must also be filed by noon Sept. 22 with returning officer Michelle Groff at the RVS Education Centre, 2651 Chinook Winds Dr. S.W. in Airdrie.

“Trustee elections are held in conjunction with the Oct. 20 municipal elections. School board trustees elected on Oct. 20 will serve a four-year term, holding office until the next general election in October 2029,” the division said.

The division also said: “Trustees are responsible for staying connected with the community to understand and reflect citizen values and priorities in their decision-making.” Their work is guided by the priorities, goals and outcomes set in RVS’ four-year strategic plan.

According to RVS, its eight-member board represents five wards across the division and the interests of more than 29,200 students at 53 schools and 3,000 staff. The division is shaped like a horseshoe around the west, north and east boundaries of Calgary.

RVS said candidates must file Form 29 – Notice of Intent with the returning officer before campaigning, fundraising or collecting donations. Nominations must be filed by noon on Sept. 22. Documents filed with the returning officer are listed under each candidate profile, and appointments to view documents can be made by contacting Groff at 403-863-6693.

As of Sept. 15, RVS lists the following candidates:

  • Ward 1 — Shali Baziuk (Form 29 filed, nomination confirmed).

The city said a public register of nominated candidates is updated as papers are filed and that “candidates are featured in the order they submitted their nomination papers.” A person nominated may withdraw within 24 hours of the Sept. 22 deadline.

As of Sept. 15, the city lists:

  • Mayor — Dave Douglass; Tina Petrow; Heather Spearman.

  • Councillor — Simisola Obasan; Tomisin “Tomi” Adenipekun; Chad Stewart; Darrell Belyk; Chris Glass; Rekha Mehay; Jay Raymundo; Maulik Shah; Anthony Morvillo; Craig Dansereau; Kristen Shima; Ron Chapman; Al Jones; Shaganpreet Singh Sooch; Karen Whittenbury; Tammy Yantz; Christopher Bakke; Inderjeet Kaur.

The city said individuals may also file a Notice of Intent to accept contributions or incur campaign expenses before submitting nomination papers, and “there is no obligation to indicate which position the person will run for with the submission of a notice of intent.”

As of Sept. 15, notices have been filed by Joshua Elo, Matthew Kangal, Dustin Murray, Nicole Brown, Riccardo Trentalance, Johnny Nagra and Terry Papp.

The city noted that previous candidates David Dempsey, Geoffry Lee, Nikaela Lutzer, Justin Cooper and Mo Fahad Shaukat filed notices of intent and then provided written notice to withdraw.
