Jason Montgomery is running for a third term in the upcoming Strathmore Municipal Election.
Montgomery was first elected eight years ago and has served two consecutive terms as a councillor.
"I heard from a number of people who said they would like to see me run again," said Montgomery on why he decided to run. "I want to see good people on council and a broad range of views represented, and I think I represent a perspective that needs to be heard in the town."
Montgomery is running on a platform of minimizing strain on existing infrastructure and amenities while limiting the expansion of government. The incumbent candidate also believes in addressing inquiries promptly and having staff and council lead by example.
"When I first got on council, things were done a certain way. There was a lot less talk about finding efficiencies, and after a little bit, that was something that was regularly brought up by administration," added Montgomery on some highlights since joining council. "We tightened up a lot of our financial processes and capital spending."
Another highlight of Montgomery's was running a community clean-up during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
"Picking up litter is something that benefits the community and the person doing it. It makes them feel like they're doing something, and it's good exercise."
As for what comes next, Montgomery is hoping to see council plan ahead for big projects over the next four years.
"The town is looking at doing an NHL-sized arena that could be $20-$30-million," said Montgomery. "There's going to be the costs of borrowing, increased taxes due to operating costs, and I don't think we need to pull the trigger on something like that right away."
Overall, Montgomery said he's been honoured to serve the community over the last eight years.
"I take it very seriously, and it's something that should be taken seriously. You're affecting people's lives, and affecting people who may not have the wherewithal to absorb all of the impacts that government can dish out, whether intentionally or unintentionally."
