As part of Rail Safety Week, (September 15-21) the Alberta RCMP and CN Police are reminding Albertans to take precautions around railway tracks and crossings to help prevent tragedies.

In 2024, there were 35 reported collisions at railway crossings across Alberta, resulting in 12 fatalities.

Officials say many of these incidents were preventable with increased awareness and safer behaviour.

“Collisions with trains are often preventable,” said Sgt. Leigh Drinkwater, Alberta RCMP Traffic. “By being aware of train tracks and staying cautious around trains, you can help avoid becoming a victim.”

Key Rail Safety Reminders:

  • Trains can’t stop quickly: An average train needs at least two kilometres to stop.

  • Don’t misjudge speed: Trains often look slower and farther away than they are.

  • Stay off the tracks: Trespassing is illegal and extremely dangerous.

  • Trains are massive: A freight train weighs over 5,500 tonnes compared to 1.5 tonnes for a car.

  • Expect a train at any time: They can come from any direction, on any track, without warning.

For emergencies at rail crossings, call the number on the blue emergency sign posted nearby.
