A longtime volunteer with Cochrane’s iconic outhouse races is hoping to bring the quirky community event back after it was cancelled this year.
Dan Kroffat says residents were disappointed when the entertaining event was called off and believes there is strong interest in seeing it return.
“The tradition brought the community together and created plenty of laughs for families,” he said. “I believe there’s a strong appetite for it. It’s a staple in the community, so I’m thinking, why would we let something that has been so well received slip through our fingers?”
Kroffat, who was involved with the event for nearly a decade, says he is willing to help form a committee to revive the races in 2026. He has already spoken with the mayor, local politicians, and business leaders, who he says are supportive of the idea.

“We have the location, we have the history, and I think the community is behind it,” Kroffat said. “Now it’s just about pulling a team together and picking the right date.”
For those who haven’t witnessed it, the outhouse races are a spectacle: teams of four costumed runners push decked-out outhouses in a contest of speed and creativity.
Kroffat welcomes anyone interested in helping to revive this uniquely Cochrane celebration. He can be reached at 403-850-1001 or via email at danielsauto@hotmail.com.
