The Estevan Air Cadet Squadron recently hosted an open house on September 9 to introduce the community to its youth program. Captain Danielle Fleury said the event allowed visitors to see what a typical parade night looks like, learn about program requirements, and discover the range of activities cadets can participate in.

Fleury explained that the ultimate goal for many cadets is to earn their glider or private pilot’s license. Beyond flying, cadets can also explore marksmanship, drill, aviation, effective speaking, and leadership opportunities.

“What I love most is seeing shy 12-year-olds grow into confident leaders,” Fleury said. “Some go on to become instructors at aviation schools, airplane mechanics, or join the Canadian Forces. It’s amazing to watch them develop.”

Looking ahead, the squadron has a busy fall planned, including a survival weekend, an orienteering weekend in October, and events for Remembrance Day. Cadets will also help at upcoming trade shows, and the squadron is planning its own trade show. Fleury emphasized that new members are welcome any Tuesday night and that the program has no uniform or registration fees, making it accessible to families.

“The Air Cadet program has often been called Canada’s best-kept secret, but we want everyone to know about us and what we do with the youth in our community,” Fleury said.

Families interested in learning more can visit the squadron on Tuesday evenings or contact the Estevan Air Cadets for details.
