Today (September 18) is Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) Day across Canada, and communities in Central Alberta are celebrating with events highlighting mentorship and community support.

BBBS Day is dedicated to recognizing the impact of mentors who help shape the lives of children and youth through guidance, friendship, and encouragement.

The day is also part of Big Brothers Big Sisters Month, which raises awareness and inspires more people to get involved.

Locally, Lacombe BBBS runs its “40 Mentors in 40 Days” campaign to recruit new volunteers.

To celebrate the day, in Red Deer, the fun kicks off with the MEGABike event at Troubled Monk, where riders take turns pedaling a 30-person bike on a 1.3-kilometre escorted loop through downtown.

The celebrations continue at City Hall Park from 6:00 p.m.– 7:00 p.m. with family-friendly activities, followed by a special moment at dusk when City Hall lights up in teal to honour Big Brothers Big Sisters Day.

The celebration extends to Lacombe tomorrow (September 19), when the MEGABike hits town and will complete a 3.5-kilometre route through downtown, beginning and ending at Leto’s Steakhouse and Bar.

Across Lacombe, the Turn the Town Teal campaign is in full swing with local businesses showing their support for mentorship throughout September by displaying teal décor and information about BBBS.
