Nearly 320 people gathered Wednesday evening at the Lacombe Memorial Centre to celebrate the 55th anniversary of Lacombe and District Family and Community Support Services (FCSS).
The milestone was marked during the return of the Backyard Friends Community Dinner, which has been running for 35 years. Guests enjoyed a chili meal and anniversary cake while hearing from speakers, including FCSS executive director Crystal Zens and community projects co-ordinator Wendy Griffin.
Mayor Grant Creasey and Coun. Thalia Hibbs were also in attendance.
Zens said the dinner has always been about connection.
“It brings people all over Lacombe and county from all walks of life to come together, share a home-cooked meal and really just engage with community … prevent isolation and enhance our relationships,” she said.
Over the decades, FCSS has relied on board members, volunteers and community supporters to maintain its programs. Zens said the organization continues to play a vital role in the community.
“We’re the referral services, but we also provide Meals on Wheels, home support, youth programs and everything in between. Our services are a critical need, and I don’t think our city would be where we are today without it.”
Griffin highlighted upcoming programs, including the Seniors’ Expo on Sept. 26, Coats for Kids, the Fill a Fridge campaign in November and Santa’s Anonymous in partnership with the Lacombe Kinsmen.
She said residents frequently stop staff in public to show their appreciation.
“They recognize our faces because they see us working for them in the community. We just get a lot of appreciation for what we do.”
Zens added that the dinner itself continues to have a direct impact.
“One lady told me: ‘This is my highlight every month that I can come to this and meet new people.’ There are so many bucket-filling moments, and this community is incredibly kind, generous and really cares for their neighbours.”
