Airdrie’s mayoral ballot grew again Thursday, with Dylan Harty becoming the fifth name on the list — though no further details were immediately available on the City’s register.

Harty joins Usman Mahmood, Dave Douglass, and incumbent councillors Tina Petrow and Heather Spearman in the race for the mayor’s chair.

Mahmood’s nomination papers also landed on Thursday. On a Facebook page titled Usman for Airdrie Mayor, he describes himself as “a lawyer practicing in Alberta with strong conservative values and deep-rooted community involvement.”

In a post published on Wednesday, Mahmood wrote: “Today, I filed my papers to serve you as your next Mayor of Airdrie. This campaign is about building an Airdrie that works for everyone — with world-class healthcare, modern recreation centres, more sporting facilities, and an end to red tape that stalls essential infrastructure, such as schools. I’m committed to bringing the same dedication I’ve shown in my legal career — rooted in human rights, fairness, and advocacy — to City Hall. Together, we can create the Airdrie our families deserve. Let’s build a stronger, healthier, and more vibrant Airdrie — together.”

Petrow was first elected in 2017 and chairs the Community and Corporate Services Committee. Spearman was elected in 2021 and serves on the Airdrie Housing Limited board. Both are seeking the mayor’s chair rather than council re-election.

For council, incumbents Ron Chapman, Al Jones, and Darrell Belyk have filed nomination papers. Councillor Candice Kolson has not.

Other council candidates on the register include: Simisola Obasan, Tomisin (Tomi) Adenipekun, Chad Stewart, Chris Glass, Rekha Mehay, Jay Raymundo, Maulik Shah, Anthony Morvillo, Craig Dansereau, Kristen Shima, Shaganpreet Singh Sooch, Karen Whittenbury, Tammy Yantz, Christopher Bakke, Inderjeet Kaur and Kathleen McCuaig.

Individuals who have filed a Notice of Intent to Run but not yet submitted nomination papers are: Joshua Elo, Matthew Kangal, Dustin Murray, Nicole Brown, Riccardo Trentalance, Johnny Nagra, Dylan Harty and Darrin Budzak.

Withdrawn notices have been filed by David Dempsey, Geoffry Lee, Nikaela Lutzer, Justin Cooper, Mo Fahad Shaukat and Terry Papp.

Nomination Day is Sept. 22, with papers accepted since Jan. 1 and closing at noon, according to a formal notice signed by returning officer Charlotte Satink.
