If you spotted a 30-person bike rolling through downtown Lacombe today, you saw mentorship in motion.

Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Lacombe and District hosted its first-ever Mega Bike fundraiser, raising money for its mentoring programs.

Mayor Grant Creasey joined the City of Lacombe team, the first group to take on the 3.5-kilometre ride.

Riders dressed up, made noise with hand clappers and pedaled their way through downtown before finishing at Leto’s Steakhouse and Bar, where a silent auction and refreshments awaited.

“Big Brothers Big Sisters is out there in our community and doing a lot of great work,” said Creasey. “We appreciate their mentorship program and are happy to shine a light on the important work that they do.”

The event comes during Big Brothers Big Sisters Month. This year, the organization has supported more than 430 mentoring relationships in Lacombe and area.

Executive director Brianna Berthiaume said having a mentor can be life-changing for youth.

“Having one extra person in their life as a role model and as a champion of their successes creates huge impacts,” she said.

Berthiaume encourages anyone interested in mentoring to reach out to BBBS.
