The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is looking into circumstances surrounding an allegation of a serious injury sustained by a 17-year-old man while being arrested.
On May 4, RCMP advised the IIU of an incident on 11th Street NW Portage la Prairie.
According to the notification, on May 3 at approximately 10 p.m., police were responding to a call for service. Upon the officers arriving at the location, a man fled the area on foot. As he was fleeing, he tripped and fell. The man was taken into custody and subsequently transported to Portage District General Hospital, where he was found to have a broken leg, which is defined as a serious injury under the IIU regulations.

The RCMP notes that this investigation is ongoing, meaning no further details will be provided at this time.
