Peacefully at Lions Prairie Manor in Portage la Prairie, MB on August 23, 2022, Darlene Robena Shaw passed away at the age of 83 years.

Predeceased by her husband George Edward Shaw and brother-in-law Bob (Beam), she is survived by her four sons, George (Kathy), Darryl, Scott (Annie) and Greg (Glenda) along with 12 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. She also leaves to mourn her sister Gail, brother Wayne (Marilyn) and their families.

Mom was born Sept 27, 1938 to Lloyd and Maude (Murray) Lee of High Bluff, Manitoba. The eldest of three children, she grew up helping out on the family farm north of High Bluff where she acquired her hard work ethic. Farm life was difficult and revolved around the use of actual horse power to get your farm chores done. She left home at 17 years of age to pursue a teaching position in Pine Creek and later Piney MB, before returning to Portage la Prairie to work at the bank of Nova Scotia. Returning home turned out to be a blessing in disguise because here she met and married the love of her life George Edward Shaw in 1959. Dad being enlisted in the Armed Forces was soon reposted to Germany and for the next five years when the opportunity presented itself, the growing family travelled Europe extensively, before returning to Gimli MB and finally coming back home to High Bluff.

Teaching again became a part of her life and she returned to the work force accepting a position teaching kindergarten at the High Bluff School, retiring after her first kindergarten class graduated grade 12. She loved every moment teaching the children and while still having free time in the evenings, decided to take on the role of Brown Owl with the local brownies.

Mom accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and was born again (John 3:3) and became extensively devoted to the local church, Women’s Aglow, Circle Square Ranch and 100 Huntley Street. Spare time was filled with babysitting, enjoying a good book to read, solving word puzzles and even playing the piano & accordion on occasion, while still finding time to keep in touch with family and friends.

Family and friends are invited to a viewing and visitation at McKenzie’s Portage Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, Aug 31, 2022 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. A private family burial will take place at McKenzie High Bluff Cemetery.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude and thanks to the many staff at Lions Prairie Manor for the wonderful care mom received while residing there.
