On the anniversary of the execution of Manitoba's founding father, the Winnipeg Police Service has released a photo of a man wanted in connection to Louis Riel's headstone.

November 16, 2022, marks the anniversary of the execution of Riel, regarded as the historic leader of the Red River Métis.
 
On October 17, 2022, the WPS says in a release that it was alerted to damage caused to the Louis Riel monument located at the St. Boniface Cathedral Cemetery in the 100 block of Avenue De La Cathedrale.
 
The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and is investigating the incident as a possible hate crime.
 
Investigators have learned the adult male suspect pictured above attended the cemetery on October 14 at approximately 4:00 p.m. The male suspect is believed to be the person involved in this incident.
 
Investigators request public assistance for any information that may assist in identifying the suspect pictured below. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Major Crimes Unit at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

None of the allegations have been proven in court.
