A Winnipeg family is left without a home just days before Christmas after a devastating fire on Tuesday night.

The City of Winnipeg says in a release that crews were called to a home on Horrox Bay in the Riverbend neighbourhood around 8:20 p.m.

Witnesses described the home as being completely engulfed in flames, and when firefighters from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) arrived the found heavy smoke and large flames coming from the home.

Firefighters were able to attack the fire from inside the home. However, the fire was not declared under control until 9:11 p.m.

While the WFPS says that everyone safely self-evacuated from the home before crews arrived, paramedics transported one person to hospital in stable condition.

Firefighters had to contend with bone-chilling temperatures as the mercury dipped to -30 in parts of the city. An extreme cold warning was also in place at the time as wind chill values neared -40.

It's not clear at this time what caused the fire, and it remains under investigation.

While there are no damage estimates available, some witnesses on social media have described extensive damage to the home.
