The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings are now in a must-win situation after falling to the Battlefords North Stars 6-1 last night.
The Battlefords opened the scoring early in the first period with a goal from Holden Doell. Early in the second, Nicholas Kovacs of the Wings received a tripping call which lead to a powerplay goal for the North Stars, courtesy of Kian Bell. The Stars followed it up with 3 more goals in the second while the Wings were still waiting on their first goal. Shortly after the North Stars' third goal, Stars player Wilson Steele and Wings player Matteo Turrin both received roughing calls, Turrin received two, and 10-Minute misconducts.
Things heated up even more in the third period. Weyburn scored their only goal, thanks to Ty Mason, right around the four-minute mark of the period. Things took a turn for the worse almost eight minutes into the third when Matteo Turrin was handed a 2-minute penalty, a 10-minute misconduct, and a game misconduct. The situation quieted down for a few minutes and the Battefords scored their 6th and final goal just shy of 12 minutes in. Things got wild again, however, with just over four minutes left in the game. Jackson Allan of the Stars and Ian Maier of the Wings both received 2 minutes for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct and the Weyburn Bench was handed a game misconduct.
The North Stars are now up three games to one on the Wings. The teams now return to North Battleford for Game 5. That game goes Friday night at 7:30. You can follow along with all the action on Great Plains Ford Red Wings Radio Big 106 starting with the pre-game show at 7:15.
