Around 300 spectators enjoyed the 3rd Annual Piney Mud Run as 45 ATV’s took turns racing through a pit of mud.
Terry Bjornson says it was a great weekend and the weather cooperated. He appreciates the many volunteers who pitched in to organize and run the event.
“We’re lucky that we have a lot of people that grew up in Piney, that may have a cottage here or parents here or friends here, that come back and help,” he says. “And even now our children are chipping in and helping us, so it takes a lot of people to have an event like this.”
Bjornson notes this event has safety risks for participants and he is happy to report there were no injuries.
Around $4,000 was raised to support community facilities and events.
“We have a hall in Piney and that houses our Over-40 club where they have meals three times a week and card nights. The hall itself will host socials and weddings and meetings. Bingo happens every other week there and floor curling has been going on for years in the hall, and it's once a week.
“We recently added pickleball and archery from September through till April. That brings a lot of people out. Pickleball is very popular, and archery has turned out to be very popular with the young people. These things happen once a week.”
Piney also maintains a curling rink with three sheets of ice. Bjornson says all of these community activities are important.
“It gives people things to do, keeps them active.”
Bjornson is looking forward to the next big fundraiser which happens on September 23rd. The ATV Poker Derby runs on a trail that is approximately 45 km long and takes anywhere from two to three hours to complete.
It’s a fun time, says Bjornson.
