Margaret Helen (Rosher) Chalifour, beloved Mother, Grandmother and GG, passed away on August 5 at the age of 94 in Gull Lake, SK.
Margaret was born on July 17,1929 in Eatonia SK. She grew up the second of 5 children on a farm outside of Eatonia. She spoke fondly of her childhood on the farm with her 3 sisters, 1 brother and father and mother who had immigrated from England to start a homestead in SK.
After high school she entered the nursing program at St Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon and so began her lifelong love of working as a Registered Nurse. She took to it right away and was the recipient of the General Proficiency Award of her graduating class.
After graduation she worked as a Registered Nurse in the Saskatoon polio clinic during the epidemic and then in Kindersley and Leoville hospitals. On July 21, 1954 she married Rosaire Chalifour. Ross’ work took them to Vancouver for a period of time before they returned to a farm in Leoville. They farmed for several years before moving to Gull Lake with their five children in 1966 where they owned
and operated the local Clarendon Hotel for 8 years. Margaret worked as a nurse throughout this time. Margaret’s personal motto was to always be of use and, to that end, she kept very busy! She served on several committees and boards including the CWL, Royal Purple, Figure Skating Club and Senior’s Taxi. Somehow she also had time to sew clothes for her kids and attend their various sporting events.
After her well deserved retirement Margaret kept busy golfing, bowling, curling, travelling and volunteering throughout the Gull Lake community. Most of all she loved her 13 grandchildren, being involved in their lives as much as she could.
Margaret was a forward thinker and in many ways ahead of her time. She was a champion of the underdog, She cared about the earth and those less fortunate. She was an advocate for recycling before it became the responsible thing to do. She was curious and always amazed at what mankind could accomplish. Many times she would ask, “What’s next?”
Margaret will always be remembered and loved by her children: Janet (Ray), Jacqueline (Dave), David, Dawn (Peter), and Collette (Barry); her grandchildren: Ben (Jess), Kelly (Andrea), Laura (Mark), Colin (Kat), Jennifer (Danny), Sara, Brad, Cody, Nicholas, Jack, Brendan (Danielle), Ashley (Ryan), and Sydney (Mason); and her 13 great grandchildren. She is also survived by 5 brothers-in-law:
Harry, Roland, Maurice, Conrad, and Alan; 3 sisters-in-law: Mary Ann, Olivette and Theresa; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her infant son; her parents Fred and Nora; sisters Carol, Marie and Janette; and brother Bill; great-granddaughter Haddie; sisters-in-law: Lucille, Iona, Aurore and Carol; and brothers-in-law: Jim, Daniel, Irvin, and Johnny.
A memorial service will be held on September 23, 2023 at 1:00 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Gull Lake, Sk. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Margaret’s memory to the Autumn House or Gull Lake Special Care Home.
