While the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings weren’t in action on the ice Thursday, head coach and general manager Cody Mapes was busy off the ice, working on finalizing a few trades.
The first deal announced was the acquisition of 04-born defenseman Ashton Funk from the Yorkton Terriers in exchange for the rights to 04-born forward Tate Schofer, who spent last season with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the WHL.
The Red Wings would then move Funk to Alberta, completing a trade with the Calgary Canucks of the AJHL. Coming back to the Red Wings in the deal is 05-born forward Cade Meiklejohn, who was acquired by Calgary from the Fort McMurray Oil Barons.
The trades weren’t quite done there, however. Weyburn then completed two deals with the Grande Prairie Storm of the AJHL. The first was the acquisition of 05-born goaltender Adam Kelly from the Storm in exchange for a player development fee. Then, the Wings picked up 04-born forward Jaxson Ruthven from the Storm in exchange for future considerations.
The Red Wings are in action Friday night when they travel to Estevan to take on the Bruins in preseason action. The two teams will meet again Saturday night at Crescent Point Place.
