Dazza Mitchell turned aside 20 shots for the shutout and Blake Betson scored in overtime as the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings earned their first win of the season Saturday night, shutting out the Yorkton Terriers 1-0 in Yorkton.
The overtime ending was fitting, considering the three previous meetings between these two teams, including the preseason, ended in a shootout.
The game itself was delayed slightly, as the arena staff in Yorkton needed to repair glass in the Weyburn zone. The reason? Captain Max Monette shattered the glass during the warm-ups.
Once the game got going, the two teams went back and forth with chances throughout the 60 minutes of regulation, however, the Wings had the majority of the chances. Weyburn outshot Yorkton 11-7 in the first period, and 13-5 in the second, but Terriers netminder Caleb Allen stood on his head, much like Mitchell, throughout regulation.
With 1:16 left on the clock in overtime, Betson came over the blueline on a 2-on-none with Jerome Maharaj. Maharaj opted to hold back to let Betson take the shot, getting into position if there was a rebound. Betson, though, made good on the shot, and his unassisted marker would be the game-winner.
The Red Wings will now have a couple of days to prepare for their next games, a home-and-home with the Estevan Bruins on the weekend. Weyburn will travel to Estevan Friday night, with the two teams meeting back at Crescent Point Place on Saturday.
