The Annual Brake for Breakfast fundraiser returns to the community Thursday as the Portage la Prairie School Division looks to stock the shelves for its student food programs.
The event, which encourages people to hit the brakes, stop by the Sobeys parking lot, and donate cash, cereal, or other breakfast-related items, will occur from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Rochelle Rands, director of student services for the school division, says these donations allow the kids in our neighbourhoods to thrive and concentrate on learning instead of how hungry they may be.
"It's been a fantastic fundraiser, one of our biggest fundraisers that we rely so much on throughout the year, and the community has always stepped up."
According to Rands, the division hopes for another great day of donations to help feed students for the rest of the year.
"We know breakfast is a really important meal. We're just so appreciative of this fundraiser," she continues. "We pride ourselves on ensuring that all students are fed, and we know that to get them off to a good start, we need to provide that support. It takes a village, and we definitely rely on the community and our business partners to help with that venture."
The director of student services notes that her favourite cereal would have to be the old reliable choice, Cheerios.
"We try to be peanut-safe, and so we're looking for cereal that doesn't contain peanuts as much as possible, and also ones that aren't too sugary because we know some cereals have a lot of sugar. Also, granola bars are another great option that we know students are really pleased to have."
This is the 9th installment of the Brake for Breakfast fundraiser. Last year, exactly $5,100 in cash was received, along with 3,555 boxes of cereal.
