A 10-minute span in the first period would set the tone for the game Wednesday night between the Weyburn Red Wings and Humboldt Broncos.
Matthew Van Blaricom scored his fifth goal of the season on Red Wings netminder Dazza Mitchell 3:11 into the first period. When Cage Newans scored with 6:11 left on the clock, it made the score 5-0 for the Broncos in the first period, as Spencer Bell, Brayden Skogstad and Van Blaricom scored in the intervening time span.
Humboldt didn't stop there, as they would score five more times over the final two periods to make it a 10-1 final.
The Red Wings would muster just two shots on goal in the first period, as they struggled to get the bus legs out from under them. While the Wings found opportunities to put the puck on the net in the second and third periods, it would be too late as they found themselves trying to dig out of a deep hole.
The lone goal for the Red Wings came from Liam Fitzgerald. His third of the season, coming 5:06 into the middle period, was assisted by Carter Briltz, who recorded his third assist of the campaign.
The Broncos managed to find ways to get their special teams to work against the Red Wings. Humboldt went 3-for-9 with the man advantage, while also killing off all seven power plays the Red Wings had throughout the game.
In goal, Eric Kahl would replace Mitchell for the second period. Mitchell had faced 24 shots in the first period alone, and Kahl faced 24 over the other two periods. At the other end, Aidan Fischer turned aside 26 of the 27 shots he faced from the Red Wings.
Tempers did start to boil over in the game, with the two teams combining for 156 penalty minutes. With 3:19 left in the third period, one scrum would see the two teams end up combining for 50 minutes, with two players from each team receiving a minor for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct. Weyburn did get a power play out of the situation, with an extra minor being added on for the Broncos.
The Red Wings will now be looking for ways to bounce back, as they prepare to host the Flin Flon Bombers at Crescent Point Place on Saturday night. The game will be the end of a four-game, five-night road trip for the Bombers, who are playing in Estevan on Friday.
