A teenager was arrested by Portage la Prairie RCMP with the help of a police dog following a break-in at a rural residence in the RM of Portage last Friday.
According to police, they were alerted to the break-in at around 8:10 a.m. by the homeowners, who had video surveillance and spotted a suspicious person attempting to steal an all-terrain vehicle on their property.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a 17-year-old male from Brandon walking along Highway 16. However, when the police stopped him, he fled into an adjacent field and a ravine area. The area was then contained, and Police Service Dog, Jolt, was called in to track the suspect.
He was discovered approximately 100 meters from the road, hiding in several feet of long grass. The suspect resisted arrest but was eventually taken into custody.
The suspect was seen carrying a bag when he fled. Jolt was still on the scene and searched the field for discarded articles and located a bag containing a laptop.
The 17-year-old was charged with Resisting Arrest x2 as well as Breaking and Entering. Police also wanted the teenager on an outstanding warrant out of Brandon.
He was released from custody on a release order with conditions.
Portage la Prairie RCMP continues to investigate.
