The first official winter blast has arrived for Humboldt and surrounding areas. Snow started in the overnight hours, and with temperatures overnight significantly below zero, area residents woke up to an accumulation of anywhere from 2 to 10 cm depending on where they were in the snow zone.

Humboldt was expected to have skirted the worst of the snowfall, with greater amounts expected to the South.

“People shouldn't be shocked to see snow sitting on the ground and winter driving conditions, said Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Terri Lang. “The snow should taper off in the morning, so there will be just the remaining ice and snow left on the roads.”

Roads are icy in the city of Humboldt and areas on the highways are seeing some snow accumulation, particularly in sheltered areas.

“It's not all that long of an event and it's pretty much on track for when this type of weather comes,” added Lang. “We need to get the car ready, it's time to get the Snow tires on and get the scraper in the car, that sort of thing.”

The majority of the system should move out of the area later today with a 30 percent chance of residual flurries overnight. Temperatures are not expected to rebound, so this weekend’s outdoor sporting events will have the traditional late October touch of white to them.
