The Portage Terriers held their second-ever Ag Expo at the MNP building on Wednesday, strengthening ties between the agricultural and hockey communities.
"We were really happy with how it went," says Terriers Marketing Director Cody Buhler. "We had just over 20 businesses to support us, and that pretty much fills up the MNP building. We wouldn't be able to fit in at too many more booths than that. We had about 100 farmers come out."
Buhler notes that after talking to all of the businesses, he and the Terriers have concluded that this is something they value.
"We are looking to do this again next year," Buhler said with a smile. "Sometimes, when people hear hockey and agriculture, they think it's just a little bit of hockey and a little bit of agriculture. AG-based businesses are talking about the next growing season; it's a full-on farm trade show. It was really a win-win for everybody"
Andrew Doerksen from Beavercreek Farms was at the event and said it's essential to have opportunities for the community to gather.
"I'm thankful to have the Terriers and try to catch a game or two each year with my family. I definitely met some new faces and saw some familiar faces, as well."
Portage MLA Jeff Bereza made his way around the event, stopping by most booths.
"I hope that this trade show continues to go on for a long period of time. It's a great thing when you can bring agriculture and hockey together."
Bereza notes that it's fundamental to see agriculture and hockey thrive in our province as they are two significant areas of our economy.
Following the Ag Expo, fans made their way from the MNP building to Stride Place to watch Gavin Renwick pick up his second consecutive shutout as the Portage Terriers beat the Winnipeg Blues 2-0 Wednesday.
The Terriers now shift their focus to the Niverville Nighthawks on Friday. Puck drop between the Nighthawks and Terriers is set for 7 p.m. at the Niverville Recreation Centre.
