Meteorologist weighs in on upcoming weather conditions

Southern Manitoba was rocked by severe storms this week, bringing thunderstorms, large hail, and multiple tornadoes.

Natalie Hasell, Warning Preparedness Meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, explained that the storms were caused by a low-pressure system and a frontal structure that moved from Saskatchewan.

Ranch owner near St. Alphonse reflects on tornado that brushed past farm

A storm producing tornadoes recently swept through southern Manitoba, impacting the area near Swan Lake First Nation. Jackie Conrad, owner of the Lucky 7 Ranch, shared her experience as it passed dangerously close to her property.

Located just east of Saint Alphonse and north of Mariapolis, she and her husband Perry faced the storm head-on. Thankfully it didn't very long.

Portage la Prairie RCMP arrest man in stolen vehicle

On June 10, at around 6:00 p.m., Portage la Prairie RCMP officers were on the lookout for a stolen vehicle out of the Selkirk area, which was en route to Portage.

Officers on patrol located the stolen vehicle driving dangerously at high speeds on Highway 1 near Highway 240. For the safety of motorists, traffic was stopped by the Portage diversion and officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver refused to stop and nearly struck a RCMP vehicle. The suspect then drove through the ditch in an attempt to flee but got stuck.

Busy day on Long Plain First Nation for MFNPS

The Manitoba First Nations Police Service made two arrests last week in separate incidents.

On May 30, officers from the Long Plain detachment executed a Controlled Drugs & Substances Act (CDSA) search warrant in the 100 block of Dakota Trail located in Long Plain First Nation (LPFN).

Officers located:

  • 1.54 grams of cocaine (crack)
  • 3.56 grams of cocaine (powder)
  • $554 Canadian currency

Environment Canada calls for cool start, warm end to week

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is predicting a fairly mixed bag this week, with rain, cloud and sunshine in the forecast throughout the week.

ECCC Meteorologist Stephen Berg notes that things could get started with some precipitation as soon as Monday night.

"Clouds are expected to build in and then bring some more rain and risk of a thunderstorm overnight, with potential for anywhere from 10 to 20 millimeters into Tuesday."

RCMP seize liquor and cash during search of Ebb and Flow residence   

 Mounties executed a search warrant at a home on Ebb and Flow First Nation last week, which led them to seize unauthorized items. 

On Wednesday, May 29, as a result of an ongoing investigation into the illegal sale of liquor from a home, officers from the Ste-Rose du Lac RCMP executed a search warrant under the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Control Act at a residence located in Ebb and Flow First Nation. 

Incident on Trans-Canada sees driver lose license and vehicle

An incident at the intersection of the Trans-Canada and Highway 305 left a man without his license and his vehicle.

On May 23rd, Portage la Prairie RCMP were dispatched to a motor vehicle collision at Highway #1 and Highway #305. An SUV had run into the back of a semi. 

The semi driver drove away, maybe unaware of what had occurred, but the SUV’s airbags had been deployed and the vehicle was no longer drivable. 

Officers arrived and spoke to the driver of the vehicle and observed a smell of alcohol and could see open liquor in the vehicle. 

Central Energy U13 Split Weekend Games 

It came down to the wire on Saturday at Stonewall Quarry Park, as Central Energy U13 grabbed the victory in walk-off fashion, 13-12, over Smitty's Terminators. The game was tied at 12 in the bottom of the sixth when Cassandra Lanthier tripled, driving in the winning run. Both offenses were strong at the plate as the Energy collected five hits and Terminators 12 in the high-scoring affair. Bianca Lanthier pitched three innings in relief for Central.
