Portage RCMP asking for assistance in locating wanted man

The Portage la Prairie RCMP is asking for the public's assistance in locating a wanted man.

Gary Leonard Wright, 53, is wanted on several Warrants of Arrest, one held by the Portage RCMP, in relation to a charge of Assault from an incident back in October of 2021, as well as for Failing to Appear for court.

Wright is described as being about 6'2'', 170 lbs with brown hair and green eyes. His current whereabouts are unknown.

UPDATE: Traffic back flowing from Tuesday evening accident

Update: Traffic has resumed normal flow.

 

A semi truck has been involved in an accident on Highway #1, about 2 miles east of Oakville. This accident is reportedly causing a traffic back-up on the eastbound side of Highway #1. One lane of traffic is now open, moving at 60 kilometres per hour.

There have been no reports of injuries thus far, however STARS air ambulance has been dispatched from Winnipeg.

 

Spruce Bay stabbing leads to charges for Long Plain man

A 25-year-old from Long Plain First Nation has been charged with Aggravated Assault following a stabbing incident.

Authorities say that at 6:06 a.m. on May 2, Portage la Prairie RCMP received a call of a stabbing on Spruce Bay in Portage la Prairie. Officers attended and located a 37-year-old man from Portage with injuries consistent with being cut with an edged weapon.

A description of the suspect was provided to police, and they were able to locate a 25-year-old man from Long Plain First Nation a short distance away.

Ontario man charged by police after Sandy Bay drug bust   

Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers seized over 100 grams of suspected cocaine and crack cocaine during a traffic stop in Sandy Bay.

Authorities say that on Monday, April 29, just before 9:00 p.m., officers conducted a stop of a vehicle with four occupants. During the stop, Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers detained the occupants for a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (COSA) investigation. They located suspected cocaine and crack cocaine in the possession of the driver and other items associated with drug trafficking in the vehicle.

Homicide investigation underway at Lake St. Martin First Nation

On May 1, at approximately 9:00 a.m., Gypsumville RCMP responded to a report of a shooting at a residence in Lake St. Martin First Nation. Officers responded immediately and located a deceased woman on scene. Her death is being investigated as a homicide.

The incident does not appear to be random.

RCMP Major Crime Services is en route to the community to take over the investigation.

Mounties make arrest in Selkirk stabbing 

Selkirk RCMP has arrested and charged a 30-year-old man with multiple offences following a stabbing earlier this month. 

On April 21, around 9:25 p.m., Selkirk RCMP said that they received a report of a stabbing and that the male was currently at the hospital. The investigation determined that the man was with two other adults when he got into an altercation and was stabbed.

The victim, a 55-year-old man, remains in hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

SLOW DOWN: Reminder issued to motorists to watch for children in school zones

Portage la Prairie School Division Superintendent Todd Cuddington administered a reminder to the public regarding safety.

Cuddington stated at Tuesday's school board meeting that with nicer weather in Portage la Prairie, motorists should be on the lookout for children in school zones.

"We want to just advise that when people are travelling in school zones, they reduce their speeds and keep an eye out for kids."

New Soup Kitchen promises transparency to Portage la Prairie

Shelly Burton, coordinator of the upcoming Portage la Prairie Soup Kitchen, shared exciting news about the project, set to open in the basement of the Highway Pentecostal Church on Saskatchewan Ave.

"We're opening May 1, we will be serving from 11:30 a.m. till 12:30 p.m. every day, Monday to Friday. We are looking for volunteers. We're looking for donations; canned soup, pots and pans, coffee cups, all of that as well."

Burton explains the menu will feature more than just soup and sandwiches.

Selkirk RCMP officers assaulted while conducting traffic stop in St. Andrews

A 42 year-old man has been taken into custody after assaulting officers in St. Andrews.

On April 23, at around 9:20 p.m., Selkirk RCMP received a report of a possible impaired driver heading towards Highway 9 in the RM of St. Andrews.

Officers on patrol located the vehicle on at Capri Road and conducted a traffic stop. There were two occupants in the vehicle, a driver and passenger. While the officers were speaking to the driver, the passenger started yelling and swearing at the officers.

RCMP Underwater Recovery Team finds missing man's body in RM of Oakview

After months of searching, mounties are sharing sad news regarding Jamie Wade.

Minnedosa RCMP note that on April 20, officers discovered items belonging to Wade in a pond in the RM of Oakview.

RCMP Major Crime Services, the Underwater Recovery Team and Forensic Identification Services attended to assist with the investigation, and the following day, the body of Wade was located in the water.

An autopsy was conducted, and his death was deemed non-criminal.
