COVID-19 outbreak in Emo school, childcare facility

Staff with the Northwestern Health Unit are reporting a new COVID-19 outbreak in an Emo school and childcare facility. The Sturgeon Creek Alternative Program and SonShine Christian Kindergarten programs have both been affected.

By provincial definition, a COVID-19 outbreak is declared in a school when there are two or more cases and the contact tracing does not show probable links outside of the school setting.

Manitoba sees 3 deaths, COVID test rate slightly rises over weekend

COVID-19 hospitalization rates are just under 70 people, with most of the active cases in people who are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Since Saturday, Manitoba has confirmed 171 new COVID-19 cases. This includes:

  • 72 cases on Saturday
  • 58 cases on Sunday
  • 41 cases Monday

Manitoba's five-day COVID-19 test positivity rate is 3.2 per cent, up 0.2 per cent since Friday. Winnipeg's rate Monday is 1.6 per cent.

Winnipeg forecasting $14.3 million drop in second-quarter tax revenue

A massive drop in public transit ridership is a driving force in a projected multi-million dollar city revenue deficit.

The Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Finance Councillor Scott Gillingham says Winnipeg continues to the pandemic's significant effects on revenue. 

Initially, the city planned for a financial impact of $61 million in its General Revenue Fund related to the pandemic but with the added deficits, that total has grown to $84.8 million. 

School-based COVID-19 vaccine clinics starting next week

Students born in 2009 or earlier can get a COVID-19 vaccine while at school throughout the next month and a half.

Starting next week, Manitoba's schools will be visited by COVID-19 immunization teams. 

"These clinics will be offered during school hours and in some cases, clinics will continue to operate outside school hours as a pop-up clinic for all members of the community," the province says in a statement.

Parents are permitted to be vaccinated at their child's school with them, outside of school hours. This will last between four to six weeks.

September 13: Three new COVID-19 cases found

The Northwestern Health Unit has confirmed three new positive COVID-19 test results.

The newly found cases were discovered in the Rainy River Health Region. 

Follow up with the persons involved and their contacts has started according to protocol. Anyone who is identified as a contact for these cases will be contacted directly.

Currently, there are 12 active cases in the NWHU catchment area. 

Upcoming NWHU COVID-19 vaccine clinics to be held at local schools this week

There will be several walk-in vaccine clinics at local schools throughout the region this week.  

During a recent media briefing, the Medical Officer of Health for the Northwestern Health Unit, Dr. Kit Young Hoon, provided information as to who will be able to access these upcoming walk-in clinics.  

Alberta announces measures to reduce pressure on Health Care System

The province is increasing healthcare spending to reduce pressure on hospitals. 

Health Minister Tyler Shandro, chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw and the president and CEO of Alberta Health Services, Dr. Verna Yiu, provided Thursday’s (Sept.9) COVID-19 update. 

Up to $36-million in new funding will go toward improving wages and creating additional workforce capacity to allow Albertans to receive care outside of hospitals and free up resources to treat COVID-19 patients, according to a statement released from the province. 

Another double digit death toll on Friday, September 10

There were another 1,473 new cases of COVID-19 reported on Friday, September 10.

An additional seven people are in hospital with the virus bringing the total to 686.

There are 15 more people in ICU bringing that total to 169 and of that number 91.2 per cent of the patients are unvaccinated.

There are now 16,265 active cases in the province with a positivity rate of over 11 per cent.

Sadly, another 10 people have died bringing the total deaths in the province to 2,444.

Manitoba's new COVID case count nearly doubles in one day

More than one hundred new cases of COVID-19 are being confirmed Friday.

There are 105 new COVID-19 cases in Manitoba, almost doubling the previous daily count of 54. 

New cases include:

  • 33 in Winnipeg
  • 30 in Southern Health-Sante Sud
  • 17 in Prairie Mountain Health
  • 14 in the Northern region
  • 11 in Interlake-Eastern

NWHU comments on including vaccine status when reporting daily COVID cases

Low COVID-19 cases counts continue to be seen across the Northwestern Health Unit even with the change in season.

The region's top doctor does predict the region may see an increase in cases in the fall as the cooler weather will force people inside, and increase in-person interactions.

When it comes to reporting daily case counts other provinces including Ontario have differentiated between unvaccinated, partially vaccinated, or fully vaccinated when COVID-19 cases are announced.
