Dryden Splash Park opens!

Dryden's Splash Park is now open!

An opening ceremony was held Friday morning, just a few months after the project was first announced.

"From inception to completion was five months, with the actual construction taking 29 days. It came together very quickly," said Nick Beyak, Beyak Group President. 

Northwestern Ontario’s Beyak Automotive Group donated $230,000 to develop a 2,800 square-foot Splash Park at the Rotary Park Complex on Wice Road, near New Prospect School. The City of Dryden contributed about $17,000 to cover the remaining costs.

LOTW to drop 10 to 12 cm this week

Last week's heavy rain caused lake levels to stabilize for a day or two, but the drawdown of Lake of the Woods and Lac Seul has resumed.

The Lake of the Woods Control Board says, "weekly [rainfall] totals were well above average ranging from 40 to 75 mm for most areas. This rainfall has caused tributary flows to increase temporarily and lake levels to stabilize for a day or two."

Deal freeing Catholic entities from $25M campaign for residential schools released

Canada agreed to "forever discharge" Catholic entities from their promise to raise $25 million for residential school survivors and also picked up their legal bill, a final release document shows. 

The Canadian Press obtained a signed copy of the 2015 agreement through federal Access-to-Information laws, marking what appears to be the first time the document has been widely publicized. 

B.C. First Nation arrives in Scotland, asks museum to return totem pole taken in 1929

Delegates from the Nisga’a First Nation are in Scotland this week to discuss repatriating a memorial totem pole it says was stolen nearly a century ago.

Seven members, including Nisga’a Nation Chief Earl Stephens, have travelled from British Columbia and are scheduled to meet with staff, curators and politicians at the National Museum of Scotland on Monday.

Over $152,000 of illegal drugs seized by OPP

Over $152,000 in illegal drugs, a loaded handgun, and over $30,000 in Canadian currency are off the streets following a coordinated bust in Sioux Lookout.

"Project Dogwood" has resulted in multiple arrests and dozens of charges in Sioux Lookout as OPP officers executed five Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrants in the municipality between August 18, 2022, and 19, 2022.

How much rain fell yesterday?

Thursday's storm systems brought less rain than expected.

The observation site at the Kenora Aiport reported 10.8 mm of rain following Thursday's storm. So far in August, 52.9 mm of rain has fallen in Kenora - which accounts for 62.82 per cent of the average monthly rainfall.

August has been slightly wetter in Dryden. To date, 66.2 mm of rain has been reported at the Dryden Airport including the 15.1 mm that fell yesterday. In a typical August, Dryden receives about 83.7 mm of rain.

A small chance of showers is in the forecast today, before a hot and dry weekend.

Manitoba to review highway twinning after Lugli letter

A local family’s push for the Manitoba government to begin twinning the TransCanada may have worked.

In a prepared statement sent to Q104, KenoraOnline and DrydenNow, Premier Stefanson says after receiving the Lugli family’s open letter and seeing its response online, she has instructed the Minister of Infrastructure, Doyle Piwniuk, to review the situation and look for improvements to that stretch of the highway.

Town Island sale official, Kenora makes $2.85 million

The City of Kenora now has just under $3 million to play with after the sale of Town Island officially took place earlier this month, and 82 hectares of shoreline and forests are set to remain public under the Nature Conservancy of Canada.

“The sale of Town Island to the Nature Conservancy is a monumental transaction for the city,” said Mayor Dan Reynard. “This island will now be preserved as green space and the city can invest funds from the sale of this island into important municipal projects for our community.”

Mamakwa: Ontario should enhance Indigenous learning, not ‘remove it in secret’

Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa is questioning the government on why they’re ‘clawing back’ reconciliation efforts with the Indigenous community.

During this week’s session of Question Period at Queen’s Park, Mamakwa, the NDP’s Indigenous and Treaty Relations Critic, questioned the Minister of Education on why staff were advised to remove connections between Indigenous and western science from elementary science classes.
