Infrastructure funding gaps are a "complex issue", says Friesen

Morden-Winkler MLA, and Manitoba Finance minister, Cameron Friesen, says officials have been "working feverishly" these last few weeks trying to find ways to address the funding gap between tenders for the proposed Winkler/Stanley wastewater treatment plant project, and the funding approved through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICP). The significant discrepancy, due to rising inflation, forced municipal officials to scrap the project's tendering process, and send it back to the design phase.

Altona Police Service reports spike in bike thefts

The Altona Police Service is once again reminding people to lock up their valuables, this time because of bike thefts. Police say bikes are being stolen from both yards and inside garages. 
    
Owners are also being encouraged to register their bikes on the police service's free online bike registry. It allows you to enter a description of your bike including the serial number and offers the opportunity to attach a photo. 
    
As well, police remind the public to report suspicious behaviour, when they see or hear it.  

Three doctors poised to leave Altona Clinic, two more on the way

This summer will see a focus on rebuilding the physician contingent at the Altona Clinic as three of the facility's five doctors will be leaving. Dr. Wasan Sulaiman, Dr. Moheb Basta and Dr. Meriam Basta will each close up their practices at the clinic starting at the end of June through the end of August.

Creeks up, roads soft once again as Rhineland officials await what water may come from the West

Creek levels are up and roads are once again soft in the Municipality of Rhineland. Residents are urged to use caution when driving on the freshly rained-on roads. 

Officials report, there have been a number of calls to the municipal office today (Tuesday) regarding water in basements in Gretna and Plum Coulee. 

Pumping is underway at the provincial dike in Gretna. 

Officials continue to wait and see how much water is yet to flow in from the west.

As of Friday morning, Manitobans had donated over $94,000 to the campaign, and the final tally continues to grow. People can still donate here through the weekend.

Penelope Hovorka-Alcock named Principal at Shevchenko School

There will be a new person occupying the Principal's office at Shevchenko School in Vita. Penelope Hovorka-Alcock will take over the job starting in September.

Hovorka-Alcock began her teaching career as a classroom teacher in Woodridge, Manitoba in 1988. She valued continuing education attaining her Special Education Certification in 2004 and Post 


Baccalaureate Diploma in Education Specializing in EAL and Counseling in 2008. She then completed her Level 2 Principal Certification in 2020.

Municipality of Rhineland officials to evaluate pandemic response

The Municipality of Rhineland's pandemic policy, as part of its emergency plan, is going under the microscope. Officials are going to carve out some time this spring to reflect on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We are going to look at, in this pandemic, is there any connection to the pandemic plan as we've outlined in our policy?", explained Reeve Don Wiebe. "So we're just going to go over all of that, go over the impact and what this pandemic did for the Municipality."
